John K. has entered the room.
John K.: Hi folks
<Various welcomes from fans>
John K.: what's happening?
lyris: We were just waiting for the grand entrance.
K.: What do I have to do to make it grand?
baronvonjosho: A top hat!
CRAZYBENDAver2: ...new episodes!
Just be YOURSELF!
GolfDudeMGM: Tell us about the R&S Adult Party Cartoon DVD, that's grand.
Bates: Just wave some sparklers around, if you would.
John K.: Anybody want some DVD info?
lyris: We'd love to know if there's a release date
set in stone.
cjblue0914: Yeah what will be on the APC dvd?
Well, everything we did for APC will be on the DVD plus some extras.
K.: Yeah, interviews and commentaries with all the artists and voices. But first, the Games DVDs will probably have to sell.
There's always a catch.
lyris: I'll certainly buy it for the few good ones on there.
MultiMoog1: so I have
to buy shitty games eps to get APC... hmmm. Okay, I'll do it
John K.: I got a bunch of the artists together and
did a bunch of commentaries. Even a couple Games artists. tomkenny4: Bob Camp?
CRAZYBENDAver2: What about Bob
baronvonjosho: Do you insult [the episodes], or give constructive criticism?
John K.: There are 2 Games DVDs coming out... the cartoons are in chronological order, so you can watch
the decay in real time.
BoltMitch: John, will there by lots of production art and the like on these dvds?
K.: The first DVD actually has some interesting stuff in it. A lot of the early Games cartoons were started at Spumco, like...
A Yard Too Far. That was a cartoon I wrote - well, I actually stole the plot from the first Yogi Bear cartoon.
Stimpy's Cartoon Show was another started at Spumco, I think.
John K.: Elinor Blake and I wrote
Stimpy's Cartoon Show and I had planned for that to be an epic, but the direction was pretty bungled. I explain it all on
the commentary. The first Games DVD is coming out soon. I'd say it's definitely worth getting. Lots of good artwork, great
backgrounds and some good stories-alas, no discernible direction.
cjblue0914: John, why did you decide to do a Games DVD?
John K.: I decided to take the money they
offered me to do commentaries, and I wanted to kep the "franchise" alive so that eventually they would buy all new episodes
for straight to DVD. I tried to talk them out of releasing the Games episodes so early, but they were determined.
renANDstimpy97: New episodes straight to DVD! Awesome!
John K.: they will let me if the DVDs sell.
That's what it will come down to. It's bribery!
Lion is Crazy: hear hear!
baronvonjosho: can you enjoy any of the games episodes, or do they just bring out anger?
When I watched all the Games episodes, it was different than when I first saw them. I was so mad when they were first being
done that I hated them beyond belief.
<Agreement from the fans>
John K.: But when you compare them to what else was (and is) around they look pretty good-at least art-wise.
They just never seemed to grasp the chemistry between the characters.
MultiMoog1: At least as good as SpongeBob is now, for whatever that's worth.
John K.: I'd say they
are a few steps beyond Sponge Bob.
Lion is Crazy: You mentioned that they destroyed Ren and Stimpy's personalities.
John K.: It's just
that they are mean-spirited.
MultiMoog1: I hated how the characters always got killed or mutilated, I felt sorry
John K.: I laughed at a few Aaron Springer scenes, but the rest just looks like used Ren and Stimpy jokes
and expressions drawn poorly.
Matrocidal Bates: There were quite a few failed duplicates of Ren & Stimpy, like Cow and Chicken.
That was an awful show.
John K.: I liked Cow and Chicken. The drawings and animation were great.
Bates: I thought the voices were really annoying, and I was never fond of the animation, either.
John K.: Dave
Feiss is fantastic. One of the most talented guys I ever met. I told him I didn't like the voices though. I'm sure he doesn't
like everything about my cartoons.
stnkee75: I liked Chicken's voice, Cow was annoying though.
John K.: So do you want to know what other cartoons are on the DVD?
<various replies of Yes>
John K.: Ren's Pecs was one Richard Pursel and I wrote. He and Vincent and maybe Jim
Smith did a commentary on it, so that's worth watching.
John K.: The Magical [Golden] Singing Cheeses
is a cartoon that was written at Spumco during the first season, but was rejected by the Nickelodeon hippie ladies. Games
made a few cartoons that were rejected by the dirty footted hippie ladies - I guess they ran out of ideas.
On the second Games DVD, I invited Bill Wray and Scott Wills to do some commentaries. They're great
background painters. Bill got to direct some cartoons while he was at Games, so I asked him what it's like to direct in the
commentaries over his cartoons. He has some funny answers. I guess they made a cartoon to make fun of me for making them rich
and famous and that's on the second Games DVD.
Karmatic X: is that Rev Jack Cheese?
John K.: Yes,
Rev Jack Cheese...only you'd never know it had anything to do with me and they admitted that in the commentary. Scott and
Bill both admitted that the cartoons from the second half of Games' history were not very good.
soccerdude12991: Any chance you'll work with Lynne Naylor and Chris Reccardi (sic?) again?
I doubt they would work for me. I love Lynne's work.
CRAZYBENDAver2: Is Naked Beach Frenzy uncut on the APC DVD (with bouncy babes)?
K.: It's not cut.
baronvonjosho: Is Eddie [Fitzgerald] as jovial as he is on the dvd?
John K.: Eddie is always funny.
He's going to be on the next Looney Tunes DVD too. Eddie will be on all my DVDs.
soccerdude12991: Will Katie Rice be on the APC DVD? Will the cut Ralph Bakshi segments be included?
K.: Katie will be on the APC DVD. So will all the top artists.
Lion is Crazy: will Nick Cross be there?
K.: Yes, he will.
CRAZYBENDAver2: APC is both Seasons 1 & 2 right? And we will get to see Part 2 of Altruists?
K.: APC will have all the cartoons we did. 9 half hours, plus 2 animatics. And also an animatic of Wilderness Adventure
starring George Liquor.
CRAZYBENDAver2: Holy crap, awsome John
lookin foward to see that
tinytim2301: oh goodie!
lyris: holy crap!
John K.: ...and an animatic of about
10 minutes of Life Sucks, as well as lots of production art from the show. Adult Party Cartoon has the highest
production value of any TV show in history. There's more animation, more acting, the most amazing backgrounds and more jokes
per minute than anything - including the original Ren and Stimpy. People killed themselves to make that series, so if it sells
on DVD, I'm sure we will make lots more Ren and Stimpy.
I've run some of the cartoons in movie theatres around the world, and it always sells out and people
get up in the middle of the cartoons and start screaming, like they do during Man's Best Friend. It seems
that lots of shows on TV don't get ratings anymore, but then they sell like crazy on DVD. So, I'm convinced that direct to
video is the way to go.
BoltMitch: A lot of people download whole series instead of watching it on TV, and then still buy the DVDs.
John K.: TV is too much of a chore to watch anymore. Too many commercials and stupid network logos over
renueediot: SpikeTV is all damn commercials.
Karmatic X: Networks care about the bottom line.
John cares for the art. Artists are used.. that's the flaw behind networks. And it's why they are in jeopardy. Networks need
to respect and nuture their talent.
John K.: I love the idea of the Internet but for some reason, business is too slow to realize how to
exploit it. But... there's a surprising new medium taking off. I didn't believe it at first, but - cell phones. I'm doing
a deal to release all of my Flash cartoons and some of my TV cartoons for cell phones. Supposedly you can generate enough
money then to make new content with TV networks involved and then sell it straight to video.
Karmatic X: Yes.
Actually, though you may not like anime, John... a lot of direct to video anime makes up a HUGE amount of their animation.
So, I think direct to video and direct to DVD benefits everyone.
John K.: I love the idea of direct to video. I've
been pushing it for 20 years.
baronvonjosho: Is the APC DVD coming out in the Summer?
John K.: I think APC is coming out at the
end of the year. There is also an "Ultimate Ren and Stimpy" DVD set in the works. That's where they sell
you stuff you already bought, but add some crap to it. Actually, I think that's the one that will have the animatics on it.
And maybe on that one, they would let me do the artwork and cover - if they thought the fans would want that.
Ben J Randall: who is in charge of cover art currently?
John K.: They have marketing people do the
covers. Don't ask me why.
BoltMitch: Marketing is an odd art.
MultiMoog1: The box art on the R&S Seasons
1&2 set wasn't BAD, per se, but not GOOD, either.
John K.: It was awful. It was all stock art. They
think it's weird to have the creator draw the characters themselves. They think no one will buy the set if the cover looks
like the cartoons.
Karmatic X: They promised good art on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection and then provided
John K.: The Looney Tunes DVDs are fucked in every way. They destroyed many of the cartoons.
X: I believe you. I hate Michal Barrier's commentary. He completly misses the point of every cartoon.
pixelpimpz: All the
colors are jacked on the Looney Tunes DVDs.
lyris: And the DVNR...
pixelpimpz: DVNR.. ugh
John K.: They
DVNR the cartoons. It's a digital process that erases the lines around the drawings. Go to Cartoonbrew.com to find out about it and complain.
benjaminarcand: Lyris wrote about it [as well].
MultiMoog1: You know what cartoon I liked? "Doug"... (sarcastically)
John K.: No Doug on this chat
please. Go to the "We Draw Like Retards" chat to talk about Doug.
renueediot: So do you ever talk to Bob Camp?
John K.: No.
cjblue0914: Do you like Rocko's Modern Life?
John K.: I like old cartoons. I don't
like anything that's unprofessional. I love the Fleischer Popeyes.
John K.: So, Ultimate Ren and Stimpy. They want to put all the early Spumco Ren and
Stimpys and the Games eps on one set... but I think it would be better to put ALL the Spumco eps, including APC on one set
- an all "John K." episodes set. Plus bonuses. What do you think?
x99REX99x: I like the idea of a John K set.
K.: I think it would be depressing to put the Games eps on the same set as the original Spumco eps... we do some live interviews
and gags too.
baronvonjosho: How big are my chances (I'm still in school) of one from a small town getting into Spumco (if
the drawings are good, of course) or is it unlikely?
John K.: To get into Spumco you have to learn from the Preston
Blair book and old cartoons.
renuuediot: John, do you like Invader ZIM? I know it's not cartoony, but it was originally intended to be.
K.: I like old cartoons. Period. Sorry.
John K.: We're going to do a George Liquor Movie straight to DVD, with all the characters from that
world. Jimmy, Sody, The Bad Catholic Girls, Cigarettes the Cat, Slab 'n' Ernie, etc...
CRAZYBENDAver2: Is Mike [Pataki] going to do the voice of George?
John K.: Yep.
Michael Pataki RULES!!
HonorHeard: Mike Pataki is sexy!!
John K.: I also might have a studio interested in doing a CG Movie of Weekend Pussy Hunt.
You'd like what I'm gonna do with CG. It won't look gay like the stuff you're used to. CG is here to stay. Might as well make
some that doesn't look like gay porn.
CRAZYBENDAver2: Will Wilderness Adventure's animatic have an original soundtrack, or will a
new one be made for the DVD?
John K.: What's an 'original soundtrack'?
lyris: You mean a track recorded
10+ years ago, right? Was there one recorded?
John K.: There was never a track made.
tomkenny4: Are you good friends with Weird Al?
John K.: I've met him a few times. We've never kissed.
CRAZYBENDAver2: So the Voice Recording is going to be made for the DVD?
John K.: As many as I can
do. Probably all of them on the Ultimate Set. New Ren and Stimpys will depend on the DVDs selling well and
the fans getting vocal like they do for Family Guy.
lyris: What's the best way for us to let them know we want more R&S?
John K.: I don't know, find
out where people beg to keep Family Guy going. The petition won't work. There's some idiots who didn't get Onward
and Upward that will jump on and ruin it. There's a site with lots of images from APC on it. Somehow that should get out to people and there should be a guestbook or something that people can see it and talk
MultiMoog1: My question: If you absolutely know you're good enough, what's a good way to try and get in touch
with Spumco to do work?
John K.: If you know you're good enough, I know you're not.
renANDstimpy97: :do you ever watch internet animation, such as homestar runner?
John K.: I learned
my lesson a few years ago. I only like old cartoons. New stuff is amateurish. I'm old fashioned. I like stuff that looks like
people with lots of talent worked really hard to astound me.
Ben J Randall: Do you like your own animation?
John K.: Not really. Some of it - years after I make
it. I only see the mistakes.
BoltMitch: Art students are emotional. They get upset if you tell them how it is.
Karmatic X: Yes.. i want
to be an artist. I'd gladly accept direction
John K.: I tell everyone the same thing. Get the original Preston
Blair book and learn to draw like that.
Lordofdapuppyz: What's the difference between the Preston Blair book from
the 40s and the one with the elephant on the cover by Preston Blair?
John K.: Simple. The elephant one is no good,
he did that when he was over 80 years old. Get the one he did when he was young. It's in every art store in the Walter T.
Foster section. The Preston Blair book CAN teach you, if you actually do what he tells you to do. The Richard Williams book
is a confusing mess.
baronvonjosho: does it help though, for basic movement?
John K.: it's anything
but basic. Preston Blair is basic. Throw the Williams book out, unless you want to work for him.
CRAZYBENDAver2: Do you still have the original Mail Card you got that inspired you to do Ren?
K.: It was a post card. They still make it.
baronvonjosho: You dont like Roger Rabbit?
John K.: That's one of the ugliest cartoons I've ever
baronvonjosho: it had good parts, no?
John K.: Not for me. It's supposed to be like Bob Clampett
but it's nothing like it.
renueediot: Have you heard of Billy and Mandy? The art sucks but the writing rocks.
John K.: No.
renANDstimpy97: Ever considered writing a book about cartoons and how to draw?
John K.: I have writen
many manuals that we use to train artists at Spumco.
baronvonjosho: Do you have any characters that the public has never seen?
John K.: I have tons of
Ben J Randall: John, do you smoke?
John K.: Nope, I don't.
Karmatic X: Why does everyone
wanna know what John likes?
John K.: "I like old cartoons". Repeat after me. I don't like ANYTHING after about
1970. Except girls.
Anyway, I wanted to plug the DVDs, not teach how to draw...
lyris: Is Adult Party Cartoon going to be a 1-disc, 2-disc set? Any info on that?
John K.: I don't
know how many discs - 2 at the most.
Karmatic X: Will there be any stupid remastering on the new DVDs with awkward video freezes? And why didn't
Billy want to work on APC?
John K.: I wouldn't know if the Games cartoons were cut or not. We need a Games expert
to watch the cartoons to say if there's anything missing.
CRAZYBENDAver2: Was there ever a time where you weren't credited for your Animation work (excluding R&S).
K.: I got credit on cartoons I wished I DIDN'T get credit for!
Karmatic X: Yes. You worked on some awful things.
Like the Jetsons.
John K.: I sure did. The Jetsons was one of the BEST things I worked on.
Did you work on The Smurfs?
John K.: Yes I did.
Ben J Randall: John, have you ever been turned on by a cartoon?
John K.: Yes I have.
J Randall: The Little Mermaid, perhaps?
John K.: Jesus, no
lyris: Coal Black?
yes Coal Black... Tinkerbell...
Karmatic X: Hey John.. you know Powdered Toastman's Assistant? She's one of the
hottest cartoons I've ever seen - seriously.
John K.: the Lovely Assistant... Mike Fontanelli and I drew her. Between
trips to the bathroom.
pixelpimpz: What is Mike doing now?
John K.: He works at WB licensing art department,
drawing Scooby Doo T-shirts.
lyris: Aw, hell no
Ben J Randall: That's the life
X: Poor Mike!
Yeti747: Who drew the people lookin through the window on Nurse Stimpy.. and the Fan
John K.: I can't remember who drew that. It might have been me.
baronvonjosho: John, do you have any interest in ever directing some live action stuff? Or just cartoons?
K.: I've been asked to direct live action, but I didn't pursue it. I would do a film noir if someone asked me.
Yeti747: What kinds of drugs were you and the staff taking when making those tripped out space episodes?
K.: I don't do drugs. Don't need 'em.
Matrocidal Bates: I wouldn't want to see what John would produce on drugs!
FaithlessRurouni: What was your favorite Ren & Stimpy episode of all time, and why?
My favorite Ren and Stimpy is Altruists. It's the weirdest, has the most jokes and is drawn very well.
I can't wait to see it, I'll be buying.
MultiMoog1: The clips I've seen of that look amazing, yeah
John K.: Well, I guess that's about all the news I have. Thanks for chewin' the fat with me.
thanks for talking!
pixelpimpz: take care john
John K.: Byebye!
